Dentist explaining the LANAP procedure

Dr. Christen Bergman takes a conservative approach to dentistry and strives to help patients achieve optimum overall and oral health. This means saving teeth whenever possible. A vital technology to combating gum disease is the Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP).

LANAP®, A Minimally Invasive Gum Disease Treatment

With the revolutionary Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) protocol, the doctors are often able to treat gum disease without the need for any cutting or sutures. LANAP is FDA approved, safe, effective and gentle. The procedure uses a high-tech dental laser instead of a scalpel to gently remove diseased gum tissue. The laser specifically targets the infected tissue and leaves healthy tissue unaffected, minimizing patient discomfort. The laser has truly revolutionized periodontal treatment. Patients leave our office with no sutures and no bleeding and wake up the next day with little or no pain!

Benefits of LANAP

LANAP has many benefits compared to traditional scalpel surgery. Since there is no cutting, stitching or bleeding, it is far less traumatic and invasive than traditional surgery. LANAP therapy encourages healing by promoting the regrowth of the bone and tissue that have been destroyed by gum disease. The doctors have also found that there is far less risk of post-operative gum recession as compared to traditional surgery.

Because LANAP therapy is much less traumatic than regular surgery, it can be offered to patients that have health issues such as diabetes, hemophilia or HIV, as well as those taking blood-thinning medications.

Healing time is also much quicker with LANAP than with conventional periodontal surgery. Instead of weeks, there’s usually a less-than-24-hour recovery period, and most patients feel comfortable enough to eat when they get home after the procedure.

During an exam and consultation, the doctors will explain the procedure and what to expect.

What to expect with LANAP treatment

Dr. Bergman conducts a comprehensive oral exam to assess the level of gum disease. She has digital X-rays taken of your mouth to examine its condition and determine whether you are a candidate for LANAP. During your consultation you will have a chance to discuss any concerns. She will take the time to go over your treatment options and answer any questions. She also explains the procedure so that you know what you can expect on the day of your treatment.

LANAP Procedure

Gum Disease Treatment that Promotes Healing

Using a soft tissue laser, Dr. Bergman eradicates the diseased gum tissue and destroys the bacteria beneath the gumline. The healthy gum remains intact during the process. Dr. Bergman then uses an ultrasonic scaler to eliminate the deposits of tartar and calculus beneath the gumline.

She then passes the laser over the treated area again to ensure the removal of any remaining bacteria and to stimulate the root, bone and surrounding gum tissue. This begins the clotting process. The blood helps form a sticky seal around the pocket to prevent new germs from entering the area and creates a sanitary environment in which the body can start the healing process.
